How To Be Your Own Best Friend

Tips for improving your relationship with yourself

At first glance, the concept of being your own best friend might seem a little strange. After all, you already have friends, so why would you need to be your own best friend? As it turns out, though, having a good relationship with yourself is just as important as having good relationships with other people. Here are some tips for improving your relationship with yourself.

1. Get to know yourself.

This might seem like an obvious step, but it’s actually harder than you think. Most of us go through life without really taking the time to get to know who we are and what we want out of life. We let other people’s opinions shape our own opinions, and we allow ourselves to be swept along by societal pressure instead of living our lives according to our own values. If you want to be your own best friend, you need to take the time to get to know yourself—your likes, your dislikes, your values, and your goals. Only then will you be able to make decisions that are truly in line with what you want.

2. Set boundaries.

In any relationship, it’s important to set boundaries—and that includes your relationship with yourself. Just as you wouldn’t let a friend treat you disrespectfully or take advantage of you, you shouldn’t let yourself do those things either. Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and don’t be afraid to say “no” when you need to. You’ll be better off in the long run if you do.

3. Be honest with yourself.

We all tend to be a little bit too hard on ourselves at times, and that can lead us to feel bad about ourselves even when there’s no reason to. If you want to improve your relationship with yourself, it’s important to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses—and to focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. Accepting yourself for who you are is an important step in being your own best friend.

Learning how to be your own best friend is an important step in creating a happy and fulfilling life for yourself. By taking the time to get to know yourself, setting boundaries, and being honest with yourself, you can develop a strong foundation for a healthy relationship with yourself—one that will last a lifetime!
